Description :

A remarkable French Belle Époque travel trunk, dating to circa 1912, retaining its original maker’s plaque and interior label from J. Dunand of Lyon, successor to Longueville, a respected French manufacturer of travel goods, trunks, and fine leatherware.

Expertly constructed from a solid wooden frame covered in black lacquered canvas, the trunk is reinforced with gilt brass corner mounts, gilt brass straps, gilt brass lock plates, and original gilt brass hardware throughout. The exterior displays a beautiful aged patina, reflecting over a century of travel and use while preserving its authentic character. Original leather side handles remain in place, further enhancing its historical appeal.

Of particular interest is the original interior label bearing the inscription “J. Dunand, Successeur de Longueville, 2 Rue Chavanne (Ancienne Rue Saint-Côme), Lyon.” This documented address places the trunk firmly within the Belle Époque period and provides a fascinating connection to Lyon’s historic tradition of luxury travel goods manufacturing.

The interior retains its original golden-yellow paper lining, creating an attractive contrast with the dark exterior. Generously proportioned and highly functional, the trunk offers ample storage and can serve equally well as a blanket chest, coffee table trunk, or decorative statement piece in both traditional and contemporary interiors.

The elegant combination of black canvas, brass fittings, leather handles, and original period hardware evokes the golden age of European travel. Far more decorative and distinctive than later luggage, this piece embodies the craftsmanship, durability, and refined aesthetics associated with quality French malletiers of the early 20th-century.

A superb and authentic Belle Époque trunk, combining practical storage, historical significance, and exceptional decorative presence.
