Description :

An impressive French oak torchère or pedestal dating from the 17th century, distinguished by its tall, elegant proportions and richly worked architectural form. Standing 132.5 cm high, this substantial antique pedestal was designed to elevate and display a decorative object, sculpture, candleholder or other treasured piece within an interior.

The torchère is constructed in solid oak and features a beautifully turned central stem composed of a succession of elongated, baluster-shaped and moulded elements. The slender proportions of the shaft are balanced by a broad circular stepped base, providing both visual weight and stability. At the top, a shaped and carved support leads to a circular platform suitable for displaying an object.

The dark, warm surface of the oak has developed an attractive patina over centuries, with subtle variations in tone and traces of age and use that contribute to its authentic character. Its unusually tall and refined silhouette gives the piece a strong sculptural presence while remaining remarkably elegant.

A fine example of early European decorative furniture, this 17th-century torchère would work beautifully as a pedestal for a sculpture, ceramic vessel or other decorative object, while also standing successfully as an architectural accent in its own right.
