Description :
This 18th-century oak coffer has an understated presence, combining an elongated rectangular shape with the rich texture of aged wood. Its broad boards display warm honey and deeper brown tones, while visible dovetail joints at the corners bring a distinctive rhythm to its otherwise restrained design.
The slightly overhanging lid is finished with a subtly moulded edge and opens on long iron strap hinges. Two leather straps limit its opening. A small shaped metal keyhole escutcheon remains on the front; the lock itself is missing.
Inside, a smaller lidded compartment at one end complements the main storage space, providing a separate place for keepsakes or small accessories. Red fabric covers the bottom of the main compartment, introducing a striking contrast to the surrounding wood.
The surfaces show scratches, marks, small losses and age-related splits, all contributing to the coffer’s rustic character. Variations in colour and the softened appearance of the edges give the piece considerable decorative appeal.
Placed in a bedroom, hallway or living room, this coffer offers useful storage for linens, blankets or personal belongings. Its simple proportions and expressive surfaces would sit comfortably alongside both traditional furnishings and contemporary pieces.
