Description :
This 19th-century copper bed warmer combines a circular pan with a long, dark wooden handle, shaped with turned rings and elongated rounded sections. The warm tones of the copper contrast beautifully with the darker wood, giving this traditional household object a strong decorative presence.
The hinged lid features an attractive arrangement of pierced circles, diamonds and teardrop shapes surrounding a finely engraved central decoration. Although softened by wear, this engraving appears to depict a stylized floral motif with delicate stems and foliage. It adds a subtle ornamental touch to the geometric arrangement of the openings. These originally provided ventilation when the pan held hot embers and was passed between the sheets to warm a bed. The lid opens to reveal the interior, while visible rivets secure the metal fittings around the hinge and handle attachment.
The copper displays surface irregularities, small dents, scratches and areas of oxidation consistent with age and use. These details add texture and character, highlighting the practical history of the piece. The wooden handle also retains an attractive aged surface.
Today, this antique bed warmer makes a distinctive wall decoration for a country kitchen, a traditional bedroom or an interior featuring rustic furniture and antique copperware.
