Description :
This elegant late 19th-century partner’s desk is crafted in finely figured solid walnut, displaying a warm honey-brown patina that has developed beautifully over more than a century. The rich grain visible throughout the frieze, drawer fronts and top frame is characteristic of quality European walnut, while the interior drawers are constructed in softwood, as traditionally found on furniture of this period.
The rectangular top retains its original gold-tooled leather writing surface, decorated with a delicate gilt border. The leather shows an authentic aged appearance with signs of use, including scratches and wear, all of which contribute to the desk’s genuine antique character without detracting from its elegance.
Designed as a partner’s desk, it features three working drawers: two smaller drawers on one side and a larger drawer opposite. Each drawer is fitted with bronze escutcheons and retains its working lock mechanism. The desk stands on finely turned legs terminating in bronze caps, giving it a refined yet practical appearance.
The restrained proportions, clean lines and turned supports draw inspiration from the William & Mary / Jacobean Revival style, a fashionable interpretation widely produced in Britain during the last quarter of the 19th century (circa 1870–1890). The combination of excellent craftsmanship, handsome walnut timber and practical design makes this desk equally suitable for a traditional study, library or sophisticated contemporary interior.
