Description :
An elegant French Louis XVI style ladies’ writing desk, dating from the late 19th century, circa 1890, beautifully crafted in mahogany and mahogany veneer with intricate geometric wood marquetry and finely detailed gilt bronze mounts.
This charming and unusual piece features a gracefully curved design, with shaped side panels decorated with delicate diamond-pattern marquetry in contrasting light and dark woods, framed by fine chequered stringing. The same decorative motif is repeated across the drawer fronts, creating a harmonious and refined appearance.
The upper section incorporates two small drawers with brass knobs, surmounted by a decorative marble top enclosed within an elegant pierced brass gallery. Two open compartments on either side provide additional storage.
The central writing surface is fitted with a dark leather writing inset and an attractive brass border. Beneath it, a generously proportioned drawer offers practical storage, adorned with a decorative gilt bronze escutcheon and matching brass knobs.
The curved side panels, slender cabriole legs and finely chased gilt bronze ornaments featuring floral motifs and classical decorative elements reflect the elegance of French cabinetmaking.
The desk combines the refined proportions of the Louis XVI style with the graceful curves inherited from the Louis XV tradition.
A particularly decorative and functional piece, ideal as a small writing desk, correspondence table or elegant accent furniture in a bedroom, living room or sophisticated interior.
