Description :
A charming French walnut bench dating from the late 19th century, circa 1880, displaying a particularly attractive rustic construction and a warm, naturally aged patina. The elongated seat is composed of three solid wooden slats, subtly shaped with a gentle concave curve for greater comfort. Decorative incised lines follow the edges and ends of the seat, adding a restrained architectural detail to the otherwise robust design.
The bench stands on four substantial legs combining turned and faceted sections, terminating in rounded feet. The legs are joined by side stretchers and a long central stretcher, providing both stability and a pleasing sense of proportion. The shaped apron beneath the seat and the visible traditional joinery contribute to its authentic provincial character.
Made from walnut, the wood has developed rich honey and warm brown tones through age and use. Numerous small marks, variations in color, surface wear, old scratches and minor imperfections are visible throughout, all consistent with its age and adding considerably to its character. The bench remains an appealing and highly decorative example of late 19th-century French country furniture, suitable for an entry hall, bedroom, kitchen or alongside a dining table.
