Description :

Elegant French Napoleon III vanity table, dating from the second half of the 19th century, circa 1870–1880, featuring exquisite geometric marquetry, an ebonized wooden structure, delicate brass detailing and an ingenious arrangement of concealed storage compartments.

This beautifully proportioned antique dressing table is a fine example of the decorative sophistication associated with French furniture of the Napoleon III period, combining elaborate craftsmanship with practical functionality.

The shaped rectangular top is richly decorated with intricate geometric marquetry, probably incorporating walnut veneer alongside lighter contrasting fruitwood veneers and darker stained woods. The carefully arranged pieces create a striking three-dimensional interlocking pattern, enhanced by the natural variations in colour and grain.

This sophisticated geometric decoration continues across the drawer front and side panels, creating a harmonious and particularly attractive design.

The structure is crafted from ebonized wood, possibly pearwood, a timber traditionally used in 19th-century French furniture for its fine grain and its ability to imitate the appearance of ebony. The deep black finish provides an elegant contrast with the warm golden and reddish-brown tones of the marquetry.

The table stands on four gracefully curved cabriole legs, highlighted by fine brass stringing and terminating in elegant brass sabots. A delicate brass border follows the gently undulating outline of the tabletop.

The hinged top opens to reveal a rectangular mirror surrounded by decorative brass trim, transforming the piece into a charming personal vanity or dressing table, perfectly suited for applying makeup or arranging jewellery.

Beneath the mirror is an additional concealed storage area with a beautifully finished wooden interior.

One of the most remarkable features is the cleverly designed front drawer, fitted with several compartments and an ingenious sliding arrangement. The internal sections can be progressively moved to reveal additional storage spaces, providing an elegant and practical solution for organising jewellery, watches, cosmetics and other personal accessories.

The drawer interiors display warm reddish-brown wood with a smooth, polished finish and an attractive aged patina, beautifully contrasting with the darker exterior.

The decorative brass fittings, including the drawer pull, hinges, mirror surround and opening supports, complete the refined appearance of this charming piece.

Originally conceived as a personal dressing or storage table, this versatile antique would make a wonderful jewellery table, makeup vanity or decorative occasional table in a bedroom, dressing room or elegant interior.

Its compact proportions, elaborate marquetry and ingenious storage system make it an especially appealing example of 19th-century French decorative furniture.

Presented in good antique condition, with minor surface scratches, small marks and gentle wear consistent with age and previous use, contributing to its authentic character.
