Description :
This 19th-century oval wall mirror pairs a molded giltwood frame with a generously beveled mirror plate. A broad, rounded molding is bordered by finer raised bands that follow the oval, giving the frame depth and definition. The warm gold finish varies from bright highlights along the raised edges to deeper tones in the recesses. In places, light wear reveals touches of the reddish ground beneath the gilding.
The wide bevel traces a second oval inside the frame. It catches the light at a different angle from the central glass, producing subtle flashes of color as the viewer moves past. The mirror gives a clear reflection overall, with a few small dark spots visible near the upper edge of the glass. The reverse is fitted with a wooden backing and a hanging eye at the top.
The softly rounded silhouette works particularly well above an entryway console or a bedroom chest, where it balances the straight lines of the furniture below. Its simple profile also makes it easy to place alongside more ornate antiques or against a plain contemporary wall.
