Description :
An elegant 19th-century pair of Wedgwood blue jasperware candlesticks, featuring the celebrated combination of a rich cobalt-blue ground with finely applied white relief decoration. Each candlestick bears the impressed “WEDGWOOD” mark to the underside.
The tall cylindrical stems are decorated with beautifully detailed classical female figures set within idyllic landscapes of trees, foliage and animals. The figures and surrounding naturalistic elements are rendered in crisp white relief, creating the refined cameo-like contrast so characteristic of Wedgwood jasperware. Decorative bands of scrolling foliage and classical ornament encircle the broad circular bases, while delicate leaf borders embellish the upper sections.
The elegant proportions, flared bases and shallow candle cups give the pair a particularly graceful Neoclassical silhouette. Although conceived as a matching pair, the individual figural scenes vary, adding visual interest while maintaining a harmonious overall composition.
Dating from the 19th century, these Wedgwood candlesticks are particularly decorative examples of the enduring Neoclassical taste associated with the celebrated English manufacture. Their striking blue and white palette makes them equally attractive displayed on a mantelpiece, console or dining table.
