Description :
An elegant and distinctive French Arts & Crafts freestanding cheval mirror, dating from circa 1900, crafted in solid oak with a beautifully aged warm brown patina.
This unusual full-length mirror features a tall rectangular frame housing an attractive bevelled mirror plate, supported by a substantial freestanding wooden structure. The mirror is mounted on lateral pivots, allowing it to tilt and be adjusted to different viewing angles.
The architectural design is particularly appealing, combining clean vertical lines with carefully executed geometric details. Two upright posts terminate in faceted finials, while the lower connecting stretcher is decorated with three geometric openwork motifs, including a central diamond flanked by two hexagonal openings.
The structure rests on two generously proportioned arched feet, providing excellent stability and reinforcing the architectural character of the piece.
Both the mirror frame and its supporting structure are exceptionally substantial and heavy, reflecting the quality of the solid wood construction.
The original-style bevelled mirror plate displays subtle signs of age, including light foxing and minor imperfections, contributing to its authentic antique character. The oak retains a rich, naturally developed patina with attractive variations in colour and grain.
The reverse is finished with wooden backing boards, and the mirror retains its practical adjustable mechanism.
A wonderful example of functional decorative furniture, combining the simplicity of the Arts & Crafts movement with geometric details anticipating early Art Deco design. Perfect for a bedroom, dressing room, hallway or refined contemporary interior.
