A fine French Louis XVI ormolu candlestick dating from the late 18th century, circa 1775–1790. Beautifully cast and expertly chased, this elegant piece perfectly reflects the refined neoclassical taste that flourished during the reign of Louis XVI. Crafted in finely gilded bronze, it combines balanced proportions with exceptionally detailed decoration inspired by the art and architecture of Classical Antiquity.
The octagonal base is richly ornamented with an engraved frieze of classical motifs and delicate foliage. Rising from the base, the slender tapering stem is finely chased with scrolling foliage, floral ornaments, and oval medallions depicting classical profile portraits. The candle socket is decorated on each side with beautifully modelled relief panels illustrating birds in idyllic landscapes, framed by scrolling acanthus and architectural ornament, demonstrating the remarkable quality of the bronze casting and chasing.
The original gilded surface has acquired a rich golden patina over more than two centuries, enhancing every finely executed detail. The elegant proportions and sophisticated decoration make this candlestick an excellent representative of French Louis XVI decorative arts.
