Description :
Beautiful and expressive French Art Deco terracotta sculpture by Bohumil Rezl (1899–1963), depicting a young Bacchus reclining beside a goat, dating from circa 1930–1940.
This charming sculptural composition portrays a joyful young boy holding a generous bunch of grapes above his head, while a goat stretches its neck towards the fruit. The subject evokes Bacchus, the classical god of wine, fertility and abundance, celebrating the pleasures of nature and the harvest.
The sculpture displays remarkable attention to detail, particularly in the child’s expressive facial features, naturally modelled body, delicately sculpted hair and the goat’s textured coat. The contrast between the smooth human figure and the richly detailed animal creates a particularly appealing composition.
The entire scene rests on an elongated oval base decorated with naturalistic vegetation and foliage, enhancing its pastoral character.
Executed in terracotta with a warm golden ochre patina, the sculpture retains attractive variations in colour and surface texture, highlighting the quality of the modelling.
The base bears the sculptor’s signature “B. Rezl”, together with the impressed inscription “Déposé”, indicating a registered design.
Bohumil Rezl was a Czech-born sculptor who moved to France in 1926. He became associated with the renowned Villenauxe ceramic workshops, producing decorative sculptures featuring children, animals and allegorical subjects. His work combines expressive naturalism with the decorative elegance characteristic of the French Art Deco period.
The sculpture presents an attractive aged patina, with minor surface irregularities and traces of wear consistent with its age and material.
A delightful and highly decorative example of early 20th-century French figurative sculpture, equally suited to a traditional interior or an eclectic contemporary collection.
