Description :
Charming French giltwood sunburst mirror dating from the mid-20th century, circa 1950. This highly decorative wall mirror features a classic radiating sunburst design, composed of alternating carved rays of varying lengths surrounding a circular convex mirror.
The central convex glass is framed by a raised and finely carved circular border decorated with a repeating motif, adding depth and architectural character to the composition. The numerous radiating rays are individually carved with elongated grooves that beautifully catch the light and emphasize the sculptural quality of the piece.
The gilt finish has developed an attractive natural patina over time, with areas of wear and subtle variations in tone revealing darker undertones beneath the gold. This aged surface gives the mirror considerably more character than a newly gilded example and enhances its authentic vintage appearance.
Convex sunburst mirrors became particularly fashionable in French and European interiors during the mid-20th century, drawing inspiration from much earlier Baroque and Louis XIV decorative motifs. Their striking sculptural form made them popular both as functional mirrors and as decorative wall ornaments.
With its relatively compact dimensions, this example is particularly versatile and can easily be displayed alone or incorporated into a collection of artworks and mirrors. Its warm gilt surface and dramatic silhouette make it an elegant decorative accent for both classical and contemporary interiors.
France, circa 1950.
