Description :
A fine and unusually complete English Victorian gentleman’s fitted travelling dressing case, circa 1880, retaining an extensive collection of its period fittings and accessories. The finely crafted stained walnut case is decorated with brass stringing, brass fittings and a central cartouche, opening to reveal an elaborate multi-level fitted interior with mirror, removable trays and individually fitted compartments.
The case contains ten cut and faceted crystal bottles, jars and containers, many with richly ornamented repoussé silver-tone metal covers decorated with floral and foliate motifs. A removable velvet-lined fitted tray holds an extensive selection of period grooming and manicure accessories, including two folding straight razors, a small grooming brush, a folding nail file, a small round metal container and assorted personal-care implements.
The exceptional degree of fitted organization, the quality of the cabinet work, brass inlay, cut crystal and richly decorated metal fittings distinguish this example from more modest Victorian travelling cases. The survival of such an extensive group of period components further adds to its decorative and collector appeal.
A sophisticated example of a luxury English gentleman’s travelling dressing case from the late Victorian period, combining fine craftsmanship, functionality and exceptionally decorative presentation.
