Description :
This elegant French commode is crafted in the Louis XV style and likely dates from the late 19th century, circa 1880–1900, when Parisian cabinetmakers revived the refined decorative traditions of the 18th century.
The piece features a graceful serpentine façade resting on slender cabriole legs, terminating in delicate gilt bronze sabots. The structure is veneered in beautifully figured woods, likely walnut, fruitwood and burl veneers, combined with finely executed geometric parquetry marquetry panels on the sides and drawer fronts.
At the center, a finely composed marquetry medallion depicts a musical trophy, including a violin, wind instruments, flowers, and an open music score. Executed in contrasting woods, this decorative composition reflects the romantic ornamental language frequently associated with Louis XV revival furniture.
The drawers retain their ornate gilt bronze escutcheons and mounts, enhancing the elegance of the façade.
The commode is topped with a shaped slab of yellow marble, likely a variety of Brèche Jaune marble, characterized by warm golden tones and fossil-like inclusions. The marble follows the curved outline of the cabinet and is finished with a molded edge.
Notably, the carcass of the commode bears two stamped marks reading “G. Boulard”, visible beneath the mounts. These stamps likely correspond to a later cabinetmaker or workshop active in the 19th century, rather than the well-known 18th-century Parisian seat maker Jean-Baptiste Boulard.
