Description :

An impressive French giltwood pareclose mirror dating from the Napoleon III period, circa 1870, distinguished by its generous proportions and particularly rich architectural decoration. The composition reflects the 19th-century revival of the Louis XVI decorative vocabulary, combining symmetry, classical ornament and an abundance of finely carved floral motifs.

The large rectangular central mirror plate is surrounded by narrow mirrored parecloses, creating additional depth and brilliance. These are framed by finely ornamented giltwood mouldings decorated with alternating floral rosettes, foliage and geometric elements. Small carved floral clasps punctuate the frame and further emphasize its elaborate construction.

The upper section is particularly decorative, crowned by a central classical urn overflowing with flowers and foliage, flanked by scrolling floral garlands and terminating in smaller ornamental urns at either side. The combination creates a striking and elegant silhouette.

The gilding displays an attractive aged surface with variations in tone, rubbing, small losses and traces of age consistent with a 19th-century piece. The mirror plates also show the subtle imperfections and foxing associated with antique glass, contributing to its authentic character. The reverse retains wooden back panels, consistent with traditional period construction.

A highly decorative French Napoleon III mirror, equally suited to a grand entrance hall, living room, bedroom or above a console or mantelpiece.
