An elegant French patinated bronze bust of a young woman, dating from the late 19th century and bearing the artist’s monogram “R.G.” to the side of the figure. The identity of the sculptor has not yet been firmly established, making the visible signature an intriguing element of this finely modelled work.
The young woman is represented in an elaborate and highly decorative costume, her serene face framed by softly arranged hair and crowned with an exceptionally sculptural headdress. The sweeping forms of the hat, ribbon-like elements and floral details at the shoulders give the composition a sense of movement that anticipates the flowing aesthetic associated with the emerging Art Nouveau style.
Particular attention has been given to the face, with delicately modelled eyes, lips and features contrasting with the more vigorous treatment of the drapery and headdress. The reverse is also fully worked, demonstrating that the sculpture was intended to be appreciated from all angles.
The bronze retains an attractive aged patina with subtle variations of brown, golden and darker tones, enhancing the relief and modelling. It stands on a circular veined marble base, providing an elegant contrast to the warm patinated metal.
A particularly decorative late 19th-century French sculpture, equally suited to a classical or more eclectic interior.
