Description :
An elegant French Restoration period commode dating to circa 1830, distinguished by the exceptionally rich figuring of its walnut and burr walnut veneers and its substantial grey marble top. The restrained architectural form is characteristic of the early 19th century, allowing the remarkable natural patterns of the wood to provide the principal decoration.
The commode is fitted with four graduated drawers. The upper drawer is incorporated discreetly into the projecting frieze, while the three lower drawers are framed between substantial upright pilasters. Particularly attractive is the carefully arranged veneer, with richly figured burr walnut panels and book-matched sections creating symmetrical patterns across the drawer fronts. The second drawer displays a striking chevron arrangement. The drawers retain decorative bronze fittings, two original keys, and are traditionally constructed with dovetailed joints.
The case stands on shaped front feet, while the sides and panelled back reveal the solid traditional cabinet construction. Several drawer interiors have been lined with a later decorative fabric.
The commode is surmounted by a moulded grey marble top, apparently a Sainte-Anne type marble, displaying a dramatic network of white and pale grey veining against a darker grey ground.
A handsome and highly decorative example of French Restoration furniture, combining restrained neoclassical proportions with the warmth and extraordinary figuring of burr walnut.
