Description :
This charming French provincial pottery pitcher dates from the late 19th-century and beautifully captures the rustic elegance of traditional country ceramics. Hand-thrown in earthenware, the piece features a generous, rounded body with a gently flared rim and a practical pouring spout, complemented by a sturdy, well-shaped handle. Its surface is richly decorated with a lively, mottled glaze in tones of deep blue, green, and warm brown over a creamy yellow ground, an effect typical of regional French utilitarian wares, often associated with areas such as Savoie or the South-West.
The glaze has developed a wonderful, naturally varied patina, with subtle irregularities and tonal shifts that speak to its handmade origin and kiln-fired character. The interior is coated in a warm yellow glaze, once intended to make the vessel suitable for liquids, while the base remains unglazed, revealing the raw terracotta body.
There are minor signs of wear along the rim and edges, consistent with age and use, which only enhance its authenticity and decorative appeal. Today, this piece works beautifully as a small pitcher, a rustic vase, or a collectible example of French country pottery, full of character and timeless charm.
