Description :
An elegant set of six French vermeil tea or coffee spoons, preserved in their original fitted presentation case and dating to the Restauration, early Louis-Philippe period, circa 1819–1838, as confirmed by the presence of the French Vieillard hallmark. Finely crafted and richly decorative, the spoons were executed in the Louis XV taste, featuring graceful Rococo-inspired ornamentation characterized by scrolling foliage, shell motifs, fluid asymmetrical curves, and delicately chased decorative details across the handles.
Crafted in vermeil, the spoons are made of solid silver covered with a layer of gold, a luxurious material highly prized in refined French tableware. In France, vermeil traditionally refers to silver richly gilded with fine gold, combining the nobility of precious metal with the warmth and brilliance of gilding. Such elegant pieces were particularly appreciated for tea, coffee, or dessert service in distinguished households.
The set bears the important French Vieillard guarantee hallmark, a silver control mark used between 1819 and 1838 to certify the quality of silver and confirm authentic French craftsmanship. A second hallmark, appearing to be a maker’s mark in a lozenge-shaped cartouche, is also present. This traditional silversmith’s mark would have identified the workshop through initials and a symbolic device, possibly an animal motif, serving as the maker’s signature.
The spoons display beautifully detailed handles adorned with Rococo-inspired relief decoration, including flowing foliage, stylized shells, and scrolling forms typical of the enduring fascination with the Louis XV aesthetic during the early 19th century.
Presented in their original fitted case lined with vivid orange silk and velvet, this refined ensemble remains both decorative and functional, offering a beautiful example of French vermeil craftsmanship from the first half of the 19th century.
