Description :

An impressive large-scale 20th-century decorative model of a five-masted sailing ship, finely constructed in stained linden wood with fabric sails, elaborate cord rigging and metal fittings.

The model represents a grand five-masted barque of the type developed for long-distance merchant sailing during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Its configuration is particularly reminiscent of the celebrated French five-masted barque France II, launched in 1911. While the model bears no visible name or maker’s mark allowing a definitive identification, its proportions, impressive sail plan and overall appearance evoke the great commercial tall ships of this period.

The vessel displays an appealing level of detail, with five tall masts carrying numerous individually rigged cream-coloured fabric sails. An intricate network of cord rigging, rope ladders and lines extends throughout the model, complemented by anchors, lifebuoys, deck structures, small boats, a ship’s wheel and numerous carefully executed nautical fittings.

The long hull is finished in a warm reddish-brown stain and is presented on two turned supports above a rectangular wooden display base. The contrast between the stained linden wood, aged cream sails and dark rigging gives the model considerable visual presence.

Dating from the 20th-century, this was most likely conceived as an elaborate decorative display model rather than a technical shipyard model. Its substantial dimensions and striking silhouette make it a particularly attractive decorative piece for a large interior, library, office, coastal residence or maritime-inspired collection.
