Description :
This unusual large copper pitcher dates from the 19th century and is distinguished by its elegant proportions, substantial size and beautifully aged surface. The vessel has a tall tapered body with a broad rounded shoulder rising into a narrow neck and pronounced pouring spout. A long curved copper handle extends from the upper section to the shoulder, completing its graceful and highly recognizable silhouette.
Particularly appealing is the original hinged copper lid, shaped to follow the sloping opening of the pitcher and fitted with a thumb-operated lifting mechanism positioned above the handle. The construction and numerous subtle irregularities visible throughout the piece give it the unmistakable character of antique utilitarian copperware.
The surface has developed a wonderfully rich natural patina over time, combining warm reddish copper and golden tones with darker areas of oxidation and occasional traces of verdigris. Scratches, small dents, surface variations and other signs of use remain visible and are entirely consistent with the vessel’s age and utilitarian history.
With its large scale, warm color and sculptural form, this antique copper pitcher is particularly decorative today. It would make a striking addition to a collection of antique copperware or an impressive standalone object displayed on a farmhouse table, kitchen dresser, console or large shelf.
