Description :
This finely decorated Chinese porcelain vase is a striking example of the famille noire palette, characterized by its deep black ground richly embellished with vibrant enamel decoration. The large body is adorned with multiple reserves depicting elegant naturalistic scenes, including cranes, exotic birds, flowering branches, and butterflies, traditional symbols of longevity, harmony, and prosperity in Chinese art.
The intricate scrolling ground is densely filled with stylized foliage and blossoms, creating a luxurious visual contrast with the lighter cartouches. The neck features a geometric key fret border in yellow and famille rose tones, adding further refinement to the overall composition.
The base bears an apocryphal six-character mark in iron red, likely reading “Da Qing Kangxi Nian Zhi” (Made during the Kangxi period of the Great Qing dynasty). However, based on the style, enamels, and execution, this vase is more accurately dated to the late 19th to early 20th century, produced during the Qing revival period when earlier Kangxi designs were widely imitated.
Executed in enamel over glazed porcelain, the piece displays good craftsmanship with lively brushwork and a pleasing balance of decorative elements. Such vases were often made for export or for the domestic decorative market and remain highly sought after for their bold aesthetic and symbolic richness.
A decorative and eye-catching piece, ideal for adding an exotic and refined touch to an interior.
