Large Provençal Landscape with View of Cassis, Oil on Canvas, 20th Century

Description :

This large 20th-century oil painting on canvas depicts a Provençal landscape with a distant view of Cassis and its bay. Its generous scale gives the composition a striking decorative presence, highlighting the light, colours and atmosphere of the Mediterranean countryside.

In the foreground, a sunlit lane winds between low stone walls and ochre houses with traditional tiled roofs. Slender cypress trees lend structure to the scene, while silvery olive foliage and a blossoming tree introduce softer textures. Beyond this peaceful rural setting, the buildings of Cassis can be seen along the waterfront, beneath the rocky coastal hills.

A harmonious palette of golden yellows, olive greens, soft creams and delicate blues conveys the warmth of southern France. Lively brushwork captures the foliage, textured stonework and patches of shade across the path. The arrangement of the houses, trees and distant coastline leads the eye through the composition towards Cassis and the Mediterranean Sea, creating a pleasing sense of depth.

Signed “L. Potronat” at the lower right, the painting is presented in a substantial gold-toned frame decorated with foliate bands and repeating relief motifs. A cream-coloured inner moulding complements the warm colours of the landscape. With its substantial proportions and luminous subject, this painting would create an attractive focal point above a sideboard, console or fireplace.
