Description :

This gorgeous French mirror dates to the late 19th century (circa 1870–1890) and is inspired by the Louis XV style, characterized by its exuberant Rococo ornamentation and elegant proportions. The generously sized rectangular frame is crafted in solid wood, most likely pine, and entirely hand-carved with scrolling acanthus leaves, floral garlands, and shell motifs, particularly accentuated at the corners and the lower center.

The frame is finished in its original water-gilded surface, applied over traditional gesso, which has developed a beautifully aged patina over time. Subtle wear, small losses, and areas of soft rubbing reveal hints of the red bole beneath the gilding, enhancing the authenticity and decorative depth of the piece. These natural signs of age are consistent with mirrors of this period and add significant charm.

The mirror retains its original mercury glass, showing light foxing, speckling, and minor surface imperfections that create a gently “dusty” or softly distressed reflection, highly sought after by decorators. The reverse reveals original wooden planking, further confirming its period construction.

This mirror can be displayed vertically or horizontally and would make a striking focal point in a classic, eclectic, or contemporary interior alike, offering both scale and timeless French elegance.
