This elegant French kidney-shaped commode (commode rognon) dates from the late 19th century and was crafted in the Louis XVI style, reflecting the refined neoclassical taste that remained highly popular in French decorative arts during the 19th century.
The structure is made from solid hardwood and veneered in walnut with contrasting fruitwood marquetry, creating a warm and sophisticated tonal contrast. The drawer fronts and side panels are decorated with a remarkable cube marquetry pattern, composed of carefully arranged geometric veneers forming a striking trompe-l’œil three-dimensional effect. This intricate parquetry demonstrates the high level of craftsmanship typical of fine French cabinetmaking.
The commode features two curved drawers that follow the graceful kidney-shaped façade. Each drawer retains its elegant gilt bronze escutcheon, while the uprights are decorated with finely cast gilt bronze mounts in the form of ribbon-tied foliate drops.
