Description :
This pair of 19th-century Chiavari chairs combines the airy lines of the classic design with the rich color of burgundy velvet. The Chiavari chair, also known in the trade as the Charivari chair, takes its name from the town of Chiavari in Liguria, Italy. In 1807, local cabinetmaker Giuseppe Gaetano Descalzi developed a chair distinguished by its lightweight construction and open back. The design earned the town a reputation for finely made seating during the 19th century.
On this pair, four slender turned spindles sit between the two upper curved rails of each back. Small acorn-shaped finials crown the uprights, and the turned front legs and stretchers echo the rounded details of the spindles. The padded seats have softly curved front edges outlined with gold-tone upholstery tacks. As the light changes, the velvet shifts from deep wine red to brighter crimson against the warm brown tones of the wood.
The frames show rubbing, small scratches and localized wear to the finish. Set on either side of a console or chest, the chairs can be appreciated as a pair, with their open backs and finely turned details in full view.
