Description :
A charming pair of 19th-century French decorative glass paperweights, traditionally described in France as “sulfures,” each featuring colorful internal inclusions encased within thick, clear glass. The pair is distinguished by its unusual pointed, bullet-shaped form, described in French as “forme d’obus”.
Within each paperweight, freely formed polychrome elements in shades of blue, yellow, burgundy, white and green create a lively three-dimensional composition. The inclusions appear suspended within the transparent body of the glass, producing changing effects of color, depth and movement depending on the angle from which the pieces are viewed.
The two examples were conceived as a pair but are not completely identical, with natural variations in the arrangement of their internal decoration. Their compact proportions and unusual silhouette make them particularly attractive objects for display on a desk, bookshelf, console or within a collection of antique glass.
Dating from the 19th-century, the pair combines the decorative appeal of antique French glass with the wonderfully individual character associated with hand-crafted paperweights of the period.
