Description :
A wonderful pair of vintage French silver-plated wine or champagne coolers with an exceptional provenance from the celebrated Hôtel Belles Rives in Juan-les-Pins on the French Riviera.
Of classic cylindrical form, each cooler is fitted with two elegant loop handles and finished with a substantial rolled rim. Their restrained design, generous proportions and beautifully aged silver-plated surfaces give them the understated sophistication associated with French luxury hotels of the early to mid-20th century.
Both coolers are stamped to the underside “88” and “A”.
The provenance is particularly evocative. The Hôtel Belles Rives occupies the former Villa Saint-Louis, famously associated with F. Scott Fitzgerald and his wife Zelda during their years on the Côte d’Azur. The villa was transformed into the Hôtel Belles Rives in 1929 and subsequently developed into one of the Riviera’s emblematic Art Deco hotels.
These coolers have clearly seen genuine service and retain scratches, rubbing, oxidation and wear to the silver-plated finish, particularly to the interiors, entirely consistent with their age and former hotel use. Rather than detracting from the pieces, this authentic patina gives them considerable character.
Perfect for wine or champagne, they would also make striking decorative objects in a bar, dining room or kitchen. A rare pair combining French Riviera glamour, hotel history and wonderfully authentic vintage character.
France, circa 1930s–1940s.
