Description :

A charming and highly decorative pair of French gilt bronze figural candlesticks dating from the Napoleon III period, designed in the Neoclassical taste and featuring two finely modelled female figures inspired by Classical Antiquity.

Each candlestick is centred by a standing maiden dressed in gracefully draped classical robes and carrying a different group of intriguing attributes. One figure appears to hold an antique-style oil lamp together with a small ewer or vessel, imagery that may evoke light, abundance or domestic life.

Her companion carries particularly unusual attributes. She holds a long, slender staff supporting what appears to be a flowing, double-pointed banner, seemingly decorated with a "Fleur-de-Lys" motif. Alongside it, she carries an object resembling a spool or spindle with visible thread, possibly referring to spinning or weaving. While the precise allegorical meaning of these two figures remains open to interpretation, their attributes lend the pair considerable narrative and decorative interest.

The figures stand before tall architectural stems terminating in circular drip pans and ornamented candle sockets. Each is raised on an elaborate shaped base enriched with scrolling foliage, stylised classical ornament and boldly curved feet.

The gilt surface has acquired an attractive warm patina, with areas of natural wear and oxidation consistent with age, particularly around the bases and recessed details. These variations enhance the sculptural modelling and authentic antique character of the pair.

An unusual and elegant pair of 19th-century French candlesticks, equally appealing displayed on a mantelpiece, console, commode or dining table.

France, 19th century.
