Description :
This elegant pair of French faience vases was produced by the renowned Faïencerie de Gien, one of France’s most celebrated ceramic manufacturers, founded in 1821. The marks visible under the base—featuring the castle emblem with the inscription “GIEN France” and the text indicating hand decoration—suggest a production dating most likely from the mid-20th century, circa 1950–1970, a period when the factory revived historic decorative styles with vibrant enamel decoration.
The vases are crafted in glazed faience, a tin-glazed earthenware typical of the Gien workshops, prized for its luminous surface and rich hand-painted decoration. Each vase is beautifully decorated with polychrome floral motifs inspired by traditional Asian and European decorative arts. The composition features large blooming flowers resembling peonies or stylized garden roses, rendered in deep red and burgundy tones with golden yellow centers. Surrounding them are delicate branches with smaller blossoms and leaves in shades of cobalt blue, soft sky blue, green, and warm ochre, creating a lively botanical composition that wraps around the body of each vase.
The elegant twin handles are sculpted and glazed in a striking cobalt blue, designed with a stylized vegetal or ribbon motif that enhances the sculptural quality of the form. The flared neck is finished with a subtle ochre-toned rim and a decorative blue frieze around the shoulder, adding further refinement.
The pair remains in very good decorative condition, with vibrant colors and glossy glaze. One handle presents a small, discreet chip, mentioned for accuracy but barely noticeable and not affecting the overall beauty or display presence of the piece.
Charming and decorative, these Gien vases beautifully illustrate the tradition of French artistic faience and would make a striking addition to a mantelpiece, console, or collector’s display.
