This distinctive mid-20th-century ceramic saucepan was created by French ceramist Robert Picault in Vallauris around 1960. The rounded vessel is fitted with a generous sculptural handle and a small pouring lip, giving the piece a pleasing balance between practical form and graphic decoration.
Its ivory-white ground is enlivened by Picault’s characteristic palette of deep green and warm manganese brown. The exterior is decorated with an energetic grid of alternating circles, crosshatched medallions, squares and crossed motifs. Each element was freely painted by hand, lending the decoration a lively and slightly irregular quality that makes the piece unique. The elongated handle is highlighted with sweeping green bands and features a small suspension hole at the end. The artist’s painted monogram appears beneath the unglazed base.
This charming saucepan embodies the creativity of post-war Vallauris ceramics, when traditional household forms were transformed into highly decorative objects. It would make a striking addition to a collection of French studio pottery or a colourful accent displayed in a kitchen or dining room.
The piece remains in good vintage condition. Age-related crazing is visible inside, together with minor surface wear and small glaze losses around the pouring lip and rim, consistent with age and clearly shown in the photographs.
