Description :
A charming vintage ceramic saucepan by French ceramicist Robert Picault, produced in Vallauris in the South of France, circa 1960. The piece is hand-decorated in Picault’s highly recognizable Mediterranean palette, combining rich turquoise-green, creamy white and warm brown tones.
The rounded body is decorated with a lively arrangement of geometric borders and stylized radiating motifs, while the long integral handle continues the green and brown decoration. A small pouring lip adds to the practical and sculptural character of the piece. The underside is signed with the artist’s characteristic “RP” initials.
Robert Picault was an important figure in the post-war Vallauris ceramic movement, creating distinctive utilitarian wares whose bold decoration made everyday objects highly decorative. This saucepan is a particularly attractive example and could equally be displayed as a collectible piece of mid-century French ceramics.
The piece remains in good vintage condition. As shown in the photographs, there is a fine line visible on the glazed interior near the rim. Although it may initially resemble a hairline crack, there is no corresponding trace whatsoever on the exterior. It therefore appears to be a firing/glaze flaw dating from manufacture rather than a structural crack. Minor irregularities and variations in the hand-applied glaze are consistent with the artisanal production of the piece.
