Description :
A charming set of nine ceramic knife rests by French ceramicist Robert Picault, produced in Vallauris, on the French Riviera, circa 1960.
Each rectangular rest is individually hand-painted with Picault’s instantly recognizable Mediterranean palette of turquoise green, deep cobalt blue, sunny yellow and touches of dark green. The decoration varies from piece to piece, combining stylized flowers, spirals, crosses, geometric forms and abstract motifs. Together, they create a wonderfully lively and harmonious set while retaining the individuality characteristic of hand-decorated studio pottery.
The undersides are hand-marked “RP”, confirming their attribution to Robert Picault. Picault was an important figure in the post-war Vallauris ceramic movement and worked alongside many of the leading artists and potters associated with this celebrated period of French ceramics.
Originally designed as knife rests for an elegant table setting, these pieces are equally appealing today as collectible examples of mid-century French pottery. Their bright colors and graphic decoration make them particularly decorative when displayed together.
