An elegant and decorative set of four French Empire period armchairs, crafted in solid walnut during the early 19th century, circa 1810–1825. These finely proportioned fauteuils display the restrained grandeur characteristic of the Empire style while featuring beautifully carved dolphin-head arm supports, a highly desirable neoclassical motif inspired by the decorative arts of Antiquity.
Each chair is constructed with a gently curved crest rail, square upholstered back, and broad, comfortable seat, all resting on strong tapering front and rear legs. The carved arm terminals are particularly striking, with stylized dolphin heads, scrolling details, and finely executed foliage carving that demonstrate excellent craftsmanship. The rich walnut has acquired a deep, warm patina over time, highlighting the natural beauty of the timber.
The chairs retain a later striped upholstery in soft pink and cream tones, which remains clean and usable while complementing the dark walnut frames. The frames are structurally sound and sturdy, showing the expected wear, small marks, minor restorations, and age-related imperfections consistent with over 200 years of careful use.
