Description :
A vibrant and rare set of six French ceramic mugs created by celebrated artist and ceramicist Robert Picault in Vallauris, on the French Riviera, circa 1960. Each generously proportioned mug is individually hand-painted with a lively combination of geometric motifs, including zigzags, grids, circles, crosses and stylized floral designs. The distinctive palette of turquoise green, deep cobalt blue and sunny yellow is particularly characteristic of Picault’s joyful Mediterranean modernist style.
Although conceived as a coordinated set, every mug features its own decorative composition, giving the group a wonderfully playful and collected appearance. Their expressive brushwork and slight variations in form reflect the handmade nature of Vallauris pottery and ensure that no two pieces are exactly alike.
Robert Picault worked in Vallauris during the golden age of French ceramics and collaborated with several important artists, including Pablo Picasso. His functional pieces combine everyday practicality with bold, highly recognizable decoration. These mugs would bring color and personality to a breakfast table, kitchen display or collection of mid-century French ceramics.
All six pieces are signed beneath. Good vintage condition with minor irregularities and traces of age consistent with handmade ceramic pieces.
