Description :
A charming set of Two French Louis XVI period medallion armchairs, dating to circa 1775 and crafted from carved and patinated beechwood. With their elegant proportions and beautifully aged appearance, these armchairs are fine examples of French seating from the late 18th century.
Each chair features a characteristic oval medallion back framed by molded and carved beechwood, above a generously upholstered seat. The open armrests are gently curved and supported by shaped uprights, while the chairs rest on four slender tapered and fluted legs. Delicate carved floral motifs ornament the seat rails, complemented by carved details at the junction of the arms and front legs.
The warm brown patina of the beechwood has developed considerable character over time and contrasts beautifully with the rose-pink floral upholstery, decorated with large roses, smaller blossoms and green foliage.
Both chairs display the expected signs of age and use associated with genuine 18th-century furniture. The wooden frames show various small losses, knocks, scratches, surface wear and evidence of old repairs, all visible in the photographs. The upholstery also presents some age-related wear and has become slightly fuzzy and rubbed in places. These imperfections do not detract from the wonderful decorative presence of the pair and contribute to their authentic antique character.
A particularly attractive pair of genuine Louis XVI period armchairs, ideal as occasional, fireside or bedroom seating and equally appealing in a classical or contemporary interior.
May need to be reupholstered.
