Description :
A decorative British Victorian cast iron umbrella stand, dating to circa 1880, retaining its removable cast iron drip tray. Designed for the entrance hall, the stand combines a practical purpose with the elaborate ornamental ironwork characteristic of the Victorian period.
The tall openwork back is particularly attractive, composed around a symmetrical arrangement of stylized foliage, scrolling forms, palmettes and classical urn-like motifs. An arched crest crowns the composition, while the shaped horizontal rail provides support for umbrellas and walking sticks. The extensive pierced decoration gives the substantial cast iron construction an unexpectedly light and architectural appearance.
At the base, the shaped removable drip tray is divided into two sections and sits within its original cast iron surround. This practical feature was intended to collect water from wet umbrellas while allowing the tray to be easily removed for cleaning.
The stand retains an appealing old green painted surface, now beautifully weathered with variations in tone, areas of oxidation, rubbing and losses consistent with age and use. Rather than detracting from the piece, this naturally developed patina emphasizes the relief of the cast decoration and gives the stand considerable character.
A particularly decorative example of late 19th-century British cast ironwork, equally suited to an entrance hall, vestibule or mudroom, and attractive enough to be displayed as a sculptural architectural element in its own right.
