This elegant French two-drawer commode, crafted in the Louis XV style, dates from the Napoleon III period, circa 1860–1880. The piece displays the characteristic bombe form and graceful cabriole legs associated with 18th-century French furniture, enhanced by finely chased gilt-bronze mounts placed at the corners, apron, and feet.
The primary structure is crafted from solid oak, a traditional and durable wood commonly used in the construction of fine French furniture. The exterior is veneered in beautifully figured walnut, carefully arranged in a subtle chevron pattern across the facade and sides, creating a warm and refined visual effect.
The drawers are decorated with delicate floral marquetry panels centered around a classical urn overflowing with flowers. This decorative inlay work is composed of several contrasting woods, including lighter maple and fruitwoods such as pearwood, selected to create subtle variations in tone and depth. Fine string inlays, likely in maple or boxwood, frame the panels and further highlight the quality of the cabinetmaker’s craftsmanship.
