Description:
An elegant and highly decorative pair of French gilt bronze candlesticks dating from the 19th century. Beautifully cast and richly detailed, each candlestick features a tall architectural stem embellished with striking classical mask or grotesque head motifs, surrounded by finely modeled foliage and ornamental detailing.
The stems rise from broad circular bases set upon shaped square platforms. The bases are decorated with an elaborate repeating border of scrolling foliage and stylized leaf motifs, while the polished central surfaces provide an attractive contrast to the more heavily ornamented areas. Above, each stem supports a wide drip pan with radiating decoration and a substantial candle cup enriched with further molded and chased details.
The combination of architectural forms, classical masks and abundant foliate ornament gives this pair a particularly handsome and imposing appearance. Their warm, aged gilt bronze surface has developed an attractive patina over time, emphasizing the depth and definition of the decoration.
Displaying the expected signs of age and previous use, the candlesticks retain a wonderfully authentic antique character. Please refer closely to the photographs for details of their condition.
An impressive decorative pair that would work beautifully on a mantelpiece, console table, dining table or as part of a traditional or eclectic interior.
